My Essay Outline

1.    Research Question
How can we avoid misinterpretation of the meaning of bowing?

2 Thesis statement: Bowing may cause misunderstanding of its meaning because it is interpreted differently from each culture. We should be careful to convey its meaning correctly and we should understand more about the background of each culture.

I   Introduction
              A  Introducing the bow by Obama to the Japanese emperor.
B  Some assumption predicted from the bow.
C  Why the bow was focused by the media.

II  Differences of bowing around the world.
A  Asia (Bowing is very common and has many meanings.)
B  Western countries (People rarely bow.)
C  Middle East (Muslims bow when they are conducting rituals.

III  Issues of Muslims bowing in a judo game.
              A  Some Muslims ignore the process of bowing in a judo game.
              B  Conflict of whether bowing in a judo game is a rule or a belief.
              C  Cultural and religious conflict occur even in an international sport.

IV  The book Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands
              A  A brief summary of the book.
              B  The purpose of this book.
It aims to give background information to the reader to prevent stumbles.
              C  Benefit of having knowledge in advance of communication

V   Conclusion
              Bowing is done in a silence so it often can be misinterpreted especially by people whose culture is not familiar with. We should have knowledge of each culture in advance.

    The outline looks mostly good. You have some very interesting ideas on bowing and how it might be misinterpreted.

    In your research question, "we" is unclear to me. Are you writing your essay as a manual for non-Japanese people to understand Japanese bowing?? That may be more specific...try to make it clear! Who needs to understand bowing more??

    Also, I wonder how often bowing is "misinterpreted" and how often that actually leads to difficulty. Have you found some good evidence of misunderstandings due to bowing? The impact of your paper will depend on that to some extent.

    If you have found some good and can show them in the introduction, I think the essay will work.

    Your main opinion section will be the "HOW to understand bowing well?" section, so try to have one or two good paragraphs there using ideas from Kiss Bow Shake Hands and other sources.
